Isabel Rocamora at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York
The current ACFNY Visiting Artist, Isabel Rocamora (U.K/ Spain) will present a screening of two of her short films. The artist/filmmaker will present Body of War and Horizon of exile on 1st August
Body of War (2010) reflects on how a man becomes a soldier through the relentless repetition of acts of violence. Set in the Normandy Landing geography, punctuated by testimonies of serving soldiers, a visceral hand-to-hand combat is gradually deconstructed – inviting the viewer to engage in the relationship between human intimacy and the brutality of war choreography. An observation of the momentary collapse of the heroic, Body of War stages the pathos of military strategy by using documented mise-en-scène as a form of discourse rather than celebration.

Heavy or light exhibition by Juan Navarro Baldeweg in Oteiza Museum
The relationship between architectural practice and artistic creation in the work of Juan Navarro Baldeweg (Santander, 1939) has marked out a territory with few limitations throughout the author’s creative career. That concern for experiment, beyond the limits of architecture, has found one of its best examples in the project titled La mesa (The table, 1974-2005), made up of a large stage for positioning a number of pieces, in which balance, gravity and structural tension make up a unique work of art.
The sculpture comprises 31 works, positioned on a unique structure of 130 x 220 x 950 cm with a laboratory-style continuum in which the structural and formal combinations multiply on the large surface of the table to create dynamic spaces laden with meaning.

Save the dates for the Oleg Dou opening on June 21th
Oleg Dou's work develops and pushes to the limit the idea of the human body as an object of subversion, distortion and other mutations that undermine their integrity. In an interview with Zoom Magazine, the young photographer said: “I have a passion for a human face. I use artificial nature of a digital photography as a tool to reach the point between opposites such as alive and dead, attractive and disturbing, beautiful and ugly.”
Oleg Dou uses digital photography to portray fictional characters and inquire about the concepts of beauty, perfection and innocence. His images, which refer to the video game universe, kitsch or fashion, are disturbing and calming at the same time, undoubtedly sick but peculiarly youthful and alive. With his extremely careful work, Dou encourages these ambivalent emotions, seeking to agitate the viewer’s sense of what is a normal appearance

Isabel Rocamora presents 'Fear, Defence, Disappearance' at the Arts Santa Mònica, under this year's LOOP/The Screen from Barcelona festival
Isabel Rocamora's exhibition, The Intimacy of Violence, extends to the Arts Santa Monica Museum where, suspended in its stairwell, we find the moving image dyptich, Fear, Defence, Disappearance (2011); until 12th June. Through an exploration of the simile between the blockhouses found on the Normandy beaches –now disused vestiges of the Second World War– and the young, fierce bodies of today's soldiers in training, this work questions established notions on the necessity for conflict and the mental and physical structures of defence built around it.

Eve Sussman and Rufus Corporation at the Impronte Contemporary Art Gallery in Milan
The Impronte contemporary art gallery in Milan inaugurates on January 20th, 2011 the Italy Premiere of The Rape of the Sabine Women, the renowned video musical by Eve Sussman and the Rufus Corporation which, since its preview in New York in 2007, has done the rounds of the major international exhibitions and festivals in London, Berlin, Moscow, Athens, Melbourne and San Francisco.
The piece is an eighty-minute allegory, freely adapted from the myth of the foundation of Rome, according to which the Sabine women were abducted to assure the future generations of Romans. Eve Sussman and the Rufus Corporation relocate the myth to an idealized 1960s setting with a 5-act theatrical structure, a narration devoid of spoken language and filmed on locations in Greece in Athens and Hydra, and in Berlin, Germany. The modernist 60s setting suggest a concept of "a better life through design", inevitably destroyed by the chaos inherent in the promise itself. The Rape of the Sabine Women, half way between a film and a video, is directed by Eve Sussman, the original soundtrack is by Jonathan Bepler, choreography by Claude De Serpa Soares and the costumes are by Karen Young. As an integral part of the project, the exhibition at Impronte Gallery will also include a series of photographs, that have been already included in prestigious international collections. The inauguration will begin at 18.30 and the exhibition will conclude on March the 19th. 2011.

ARTISSIMA 17 TORINO
For the upcoming edition of Artissima, in the newly inaugurated section of the fair: "Back to the future" Galeria Senda presents Antonio Miralda. The compendium of works selected for this exhibition is focused on the artist years in Paris (1965-75) when the group of emblematic figures of catalan conceptual art moved to the gallic city. The main piece is the recuperated, restored and remasterised 16mm film "Paris: La Cumparsita" originally realized in 1972. The film has become not only one of Antoni Miralda's key works but also of catalan conceptual Art in general. It was filmed with Miralda's friend, Benet Rosell and contains the memoirs of the original and ingenious performance, which narrates the story of soldier around the streets of Paris in search of a pedestal. A document that recreates the absurdism of militarism war itself in a very critical epoch in Spain, Europe and even the United States; an epoch that can easily find its echoes nowadays. The exhibition is completed by a series of photographs, paintings, sculptures and posters of the war. His work is an exercise of political and social observation. Miralda is one of the first artists to flee from the oppresive space of the studio and the museum developing his practice in the streets and other territories which can be considered alien to the art cycle. These pieces must be read as reference points of a trajectory that explore the most complex aspects of our society codified with Miralda's exclusive iconography and languaje. A celebration of senses, life and imagination.

Ola Kolehmainen will show his work at the 17th Biennale of Sydney.
Ola Kolehmainen, who will present his work at Senda Gallery from July 15th until July 31st is showing his new project titled South of home-Journey of a mind at the 17th Biennale of Sidney that takes place from May 12th until August 1st. South of home-Journey of a mind is composed by a series of projections of iconic modernist buildings, not only from Sydney but also from elsewhere that the artist has captured previously with photographs. These projections let us see the approaching of the artist to the material he wants to interpret, to what he tries to depict, in an abstract way, mystifying photography itself and giving qualities that have more to be with the elements he shows in reality than the thing in its iconic nature. Despite what we could think, there are no digital manipulations in the images.

LOOP 2010: Barcelona becomes the international capital of Video Art
Video Art Fair LOOP will open its doors on May 20th. Senda Gallery and Vanguardia Gallery, in Bilbao, will present the video entitled Frontera by Anna Malagrida (video loop, 6’ 25”, 2009). Malagrida chooses an ancient line between Spain and France, a scene of numerous battles, to reflect the experience of the past and the present. Through the appearance and disappearance of a red smoke in a spring landscape, ideas about bounderies, temporality and collective memories are taken up again. These collective memories are seemingly forgotten, because the who could remember them are not alive anymore. On the other hand, Espai 2NOU2, will exhibit the video-installation Canciones para mi mochila: La herencia que me dejaron mis hermanos al caer (2009) by Rodolfo Peraza. In this work Peraza analyzes hymns of the period of the Spanish Franco-dicatatorship and points out the control and contamination of the human population by totalitarian regimes.

La Rambla: As seen by Jordi Bernadó and Massimo Vitali, at the Arts Santa Mònica
The photographers Jordi Bernadó (Lleida, 1966) and Massimo Vitali (Como, 1944) present a new project that pretends to do a portrait of Barcelona through one of the most emblematic public spaces of this city, la Rambla.
Each photographer, faithful to their visual poetry, present their personal vision of la Rambla, two faces, two profiles, two ways to view this place. Bernadó gets inside the buildings of la Rambla and takes purified images contained in hiden places. Vitali portraits the public and cosmopolitan side of la Rambla with panoramic views that capture the crowd in the urban space as a scene of the massive turism. This doble photographyc chronicle proposes, from the particularity of la Rambla, a reflection about architecture, urbanism and the transformation of the contemporary city in the new global age.

KARIN KNEFFEL shows in Krefeld, Germany
The German artist Karin Kneffel (1957, Marl) presents a new solo exhibition in Museum Haus Esters, Krefeld, Germany. Especially for the exhibition, the artist has developed a new cycle of thirteen paintings that are inspired directly in the history of the building of the museum, which architect Mies van der Rohe constructed for Josef Esters as a residential house in the 1920s.
